School Counselor

  • My name is Coleen Tanyag, and I am the counselor at North Polk Middle School. I have been serving in the North Polk community since 2015.

I am originally from Pleasant Hill, Iowa, where I graduated from Southeast Polk Community Schools. I attended college at Truman State University where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 2013. My passion to help others led me to pursue a career in the human services field as a school counselor. In 2015, I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Master of Arts degree in K-12 School Counseling.

As a school counselor, I will work to help students in their academic, personal and social, and career development. I work hard in conjunction with the other North Polk staff to optimize each student’s experience.

How Can I Help?

  • School counselors are educational specialists who are certified or licensed professionals with a master's degree or higher in school counseling. They help ALL students address developmental needs. Acting as student's advocate, the role or a school counselor is to provide and deliver a comprehensive school counseling program encouraging all students' academic, career and social/emotional development and helping all students in maximizing their student achievement.
