Transitional Kindergarten Information

What is TK?

Transitional Kindergarten is a program for children who turn 5 on or before September 15. It gives kids extra time to grow academically, socially, and emotionally before starting Kindergarten.

What Will My Child Learn?

TK focuses on building foundational skills, including:

  • Listening, speaking, and attention

  • Independence and self-help skills

  • Social interaction and emotional regulation

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking

  • Familiarity with classroom routines

Program Highlights

  • Schedule: Full-day, 4 days/week (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) | 7:50 AM – 2:50 PM

  • Eligibility: Must be 5 by Sept. 15 (priority for children born April 1 or later)

  • Class Size: Small to support individualized attention

  • Transportation: In-district busing available

  • Open Enrollment: Families may apply during the district’s open enrollment period

Curriculum & Support

  • Literacy, Math, and Social-Emotional Learning (aligned with Iowa standards)

  • Related Arts: Art, Music, PE, Library, Technology, Guidance

  • Special Education support, if needed

  • Participation in statewide Kindergarten assessments

  • Emphasis on confidence, curiosity, and growth—not mastery

  • Support students who may benefit from extra preparation

  • Foster a positive, nurturing learning experience
