Student Attendance

At North Polk CSD, our mission is “Learning for All by Learning from All.” We believe that the best way for students to live out this mission and to succeed is to be present at school every day.

Iowa Attendance Law Update: What You Need to Know

Regular attendance is essential for student success, but absenteeism has increased nationwide. To address this, Senate File 2435 (SF 2435) took effect on July 1, 2024. It sets rules for how schools respond when students miss too much school.

In 2025, Senate File 277 (SF 277) updated the law to provide more flexibility and clarity. Key changes include:

  • Schools can now notify families by email, regular mail, or in person instead of certified mail.

  • New exemptions for absences due to military service, funerals, and weddings.

  • Formal consequences like school engagement meetings only happen if absences are impacting academic progress.

We know some absences are unavoidable, and we’re committed to working with families to encourage consistent attendance. Below, find details on the law, updates, exemptions, FAQs, and attendance policies.
