High School Jazz Choir Brings Home the Hardware

Our High School Jazz Choir has had a very successful competition season. North Polk currently has 3 different Jazz Choir groups: Fermata Nowhere, Alleman Way, and 6th & Nowhere.

What is a Jazz Choir?

Jazz Choir consists of a small group of singers, usually 8-15 singers per group. Vocal jazz is an instrumental approach to jazz, just using the voice, very similar to a cappalla singing. The group travels around the state of Iowa competing and performing at different schools for judges who rate the group based on a number of categories such as intonation, rhythm, and vocal quality.

Recent Success

Recently, Fermata Nowhere won the 3A Class at the Solon Vocal Jazz Festival. This past weekend, on March 5th, the group traveled to Emmetsburg for the Emmetsburg Extravaganza. The day was a huge success and every choir got to bring home some hardware. See the results below.

Alleman Way - 1st place in Prep.
Alleman Way - 5th place in class 3A.
Fermata Nowhere - 1st place in class 3A, Best A cappella Song, & Grand Champion All-Classes.

Fermata Nowhere was also selected to perform at the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships!  They were one of just eight class 3A choirs selected to compete for a state championship on March 29th in West Des Moines.

Congratulations to each group on outstanding performances and good luck at state!
