Central Battle of the Books Team Crowned Champions
In 5th grade, all students are invited to participate in a contest called Battle of the Books. The process begins with a list of 18 books that students can select from. Any student who reads 8 titles from this list and submits practice questions for each book is placed on a team. Central Elementary had 12 students go the extra mile and were placed in three different teams. The students met over lunch to work to prepare for the competition hosted at Ames Public Library on March 31. The 3 Central Elementary teams were up against stiff competition with over 20 other teams from local schools.
After two rounds of competition, five teams earned a spot in the final round. These included a team from Ballard, Gilbert, and St. Cecilia. Central Elementary earned first and second place. Ari Sluiter, Brynn Delaney, Jill Brasier, and Sienna Campbell finished in first place with 80 points and Madalena Alexander, Grace Winter, Abigail Anderson, and Janie Zoske, finished in second place with 60 points. This is the first time since 2014 that North Polk has had a first place finish. The winning team's name will be engraved on a plaque that the district gets to display until next year's competition.
Congratulations to all of our Battle of the Books students on a job well done!
